Things to do before your house painting job

Updated: Sep 18

Getting yourself ready before the painters arrive is essential to ensure a smooth and stress-free painting experience. Proper preparation allows painters to work efficiently and helps you avoid any inconvenience during the project. Here's a guide on things to do before your house painting job:

1. Confirm the Appointment and Communicate Your Preferences: Double-check the date and time of the painting appointment with the painting company or individual painters. Ensure that both parties are on the same page regarding the schedule. Discuss your colour choices, preferred paint finishes, and any specific instructions or concerns with the painters before they arrive. This helps set clear expectations and ensures that you get the results you desire.

2. Plan for Access and make way for ladders and equipment: Most buildings/communities require permissions for homes to be painted or any kind of home renovations. Check this in advance so that there are no delays on the day of the job. Also, ensure that there are proper facilities to carry heavy equipment and ladders to and from your apartment.

3. Be Flexible and Prepare for Some Disruption: Painting projects can sometimes take longer than expected due to unforeseen circumstances. Be flexible with your schedule and plan accordingly. Be aware that painting projects can be noisy and may disrupt your daily routine temporarily. Plan, accordingly, and inform family members or roommates about the project's timing and potential disruptions.

4. Keep Pets and Children Away: For safety reasons and to prevent interruptions, keep pets and young children away from the painting area while the work is in progress. Consider arranging for a pet sitter or a playdate to keep them occupied.

5. Provide Refreshments and Restrooms: Consider offering painters access to drinking water and restroom facilities. A comfortable working environment can lead to better results and a positive working relationship.

6. Stay Accessible: Be available for any questions or clarifications the painters may have during the project. Clear communication can help resolve issues promptly and ensure that the job proceeds smoothly.

7. Plan Your Day in advance: Plan your day keeping in mind the previous point. Avoid clashing with any other appointments or take the day off so that you don’t have to be gone for long hours or do anything that may disrupt the flow of the job.

8. Protect Your Floors and Furniture: Where I live, most painting jobs include protecting and moving your items being done by the vendor itself. However, if this is not included in the paint job, you need to do this before the painters arrive. Cover your floors with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to prevent paint drips and spills. Use painter's tape to secure these covers in place. If any furniture remains in the room, cover it as well.

9. Remove Wall Décor and clear the walls: Take down wall decor, such as framed pictures, mirrors, and shelves. Remove any items attached to the walls, such as curtain rods, blinds, or wall-mounted fixtures. This allows painters to paint the entire surface evenly.

10. Dust and Vacuum: Before painting, dust all surfaces in the room, including walls, ceilings, and trim. Vacuum the floor to remove any remaining dust or debris.

By following these steps and properly prepping your home before painters arrive, you'll help create a conducive environment for a successful painting project. This preparation ensures that the painters can work efficiently and that the result is a beautifully painted space that meets your expectations.
